Single Volunteers of Greater Denver (SVGD)

The Mission of Single Volunteers of Greater Denver (SVGD) is to fulfill the volunteer needs of charitable organizations in the Denver area with an all-volunteer, not-for-profit group of single people, looking to meet others through community service. Activities provide singles with a productive way to meet other singles by organizing and performing volunteer activities. Non-profits that we help include Food Bank of the Rockies, Children's Museum, Rocky Mountain PBS, Special Olympics and the Santa Claus Shop.

Metro Volunteers & Impact Program - Metro volunteers is a clearinghouse for volunteers. They have 500 Non Profit and Governmental agencies in a database for ongoing volunteer positions.
The Impact Program has one time volunteer opportunities for young persons ages 20-40. Approximately 15 volunteer events per month are scheduled. These events usually last from 2-4 hours and have 5-10 volunteers. Metro Denver Partners
Metro Denver Partners matches adult volunteers with boys and girls ages 8 - 16. The two agree to a year-long Partnership, spending at least 3 hours a week together. (The adult being a friend, role model and advocate for the youth.)

Metro Denver Partners provides support to the pairs through counseling, training, recreational activities, and other supportive services. We have programs working with youth in Denver, Adams County, and Douglas County.

We also have youth waiting for mentors that we do monthly activities with while they are on the waitlist. We are recruiting volunteers for those youth as well. This is a great position for people who are interested in volunteering but can’t make the weekly commitment.

Peer Assistance Services
Peer Assistance Services has recently received funding from the Dept. of Education to start a mentoring program specifically for at-risk youth in Adams County. Mentors meet with a youth for two hours per week to engage in a variety of activities including group recreational activities, community service projects, cultural and sports events. Mentoring helps youth who are in need of an adult friend and role model gain self esteem and improve academic achievement among numerous other benefits. We are now in the recruitment phase of the program and I looking for places to post our volunteer opportunity.

A nonprofit organization that serves some of the worst abused children in the state of Colorado. The kids are ages 5 - 12 and live in cottages on our campus and attend our school. We provide therapy, food, clothing, schooling, and books to approximately 150 children each day and 50 children live in our cottages at one time. Our cottages often need painting, our grounds have gardens, there might be some neat things singles could do together to help make life better for these kids and network.

Slalom Gates Ski Club - Slalom Gates offers great Ski Trips at great prices with a very friendly group of skiers. They have both cross country and downhill skiing. Tips for avoiding abduction.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
5. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
6. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
7. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
8. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!
9. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man , who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
10. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby ----This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted recently when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

(Children, Adolescents and Adults)

A 6-week divorce recovery group will be held for children (ages 7-11) and for adolescents (ages 12-16) whose parents are separated, currently going through a divorce or who are divorced. The child and adolescent groups will focus on coping skills and strategies to help them through this challenging time.

The adult group will provide a 4-week supportive educational class for individuals (with or without children) who are coping with marriage or relationship break-up. The adult class will meet at the same time and same building but in a different office as the child and adolescent groups, however, adults without children are invited to join the class as well.

In order to boost the attendance at the next Rotating Dating event, I decided to organize a "Meetup" group. Almost 1,000 people received the announcement about the new Rotating Dating 2-on-2 Meetup Group and as of this writing, there are already 40 members. Therefore, space in the March 22nd event will probably fill up quickly (10 RSVPs already)!

Happy new year from Parker Recreation's Fitness division. We hope everyone is doing well on their resolutions!

As a reminder, we have several classes that will start in January and early February that you may wish to check out:

Women on Weights:
This class is designed for ladies wanting to increase muscle strength, lean muscle mass and endurance through weight training. Six week sessions are offered at either the Recreation Center or Fieldhouse. Registration fees are $55 R/$60 NR. Enrollment for the TTh morning class, Jan. 8 to Feb. 14 from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. at the Recreation Center is still open. Classes starting in mid-February include:
TTh mornings, 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. at the Recreation Center.
TTh evenings, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Fieldhouse; or

Senior Fitness
Parker Recreation offers a variety of fitness options for our more mature patrons. A six week Tai Chi series with Kyoshi Randy Weekley starts Tuesday, Jan. 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Fieldhouse. This series is free with your membership or daily admission. Golden Yoga begins Jan. 17, and continues every Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Fieldhouse through April. Registration is $50 for the four months.

Eligibility for SilverSneakers expanded Jan. 1, adding certain AARP Medicare Supplemental insurance subscribers to the list of people who qualify for FREE Parker Recreation memberships. It's not too late to sign up for the Living Active Challenge!
If you haven't signed up for the Living Active Challenge (formerly the 30/30 Challenge), it's not too late! Between now and Jan. 31, your goal is to perform 180 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per week. You can run, bike, swim or take an aerobics class; even a brisk walk qualifies. Mix it up however you want, but you must complete 720 minutes by the end of the month. The grand prize for this challenge is an ipod, so we're making it worth your effort!

Dating Advise can be helpful when getting back into the dating world, especially the world of online dating with the large number of potential matches from whom you can choose. Follow this dating advise to learn how to recognize the different types of daters, both in yourself and others, and how to consider the different types of daters in your dating strategy. The best advice starts here.
There are basically seven types of daters who sometimes overlap in their styles. These seven types are The Player, Ready for Relationship (RFR), Ready for Marriage (RFM), The Confused, The Injured, The Hungry, and The Married. Understanding the intentions of your dating partner is the key to predicting the likelihood of there being a good match and avoiding hurt feelings. Let's talk about each of the seven types of daters then discuss how you can tell who is who and even who are you!

The Player is someone who has no intention of getting into a committed relationship. They may be getting all their needs fulfilled from multiple partners. There is a certain degree of independence they don't want to loose. That doesn't mean that they won't see the same person for a long time. The Player will be often be very happy to see the same person for years as long as they aren't required to have any responsibility to that person. If you are a Player yourself, hooking up with another Player can be a perfect match. Just keep in mind that people change over time. Someone who is a Player today, may become someone ready for marriage tomorrow.
The Ready for Marriage (RFM) type is someone who does not want to be single anymore. They may have enjoyed being single in the past but they are now ready to settle down. They have dated enough and been in enough different relationships to know what they want. The RFM type will often tell you what they are looking for because they don't want to waste time with someone who isn't read for marriage. However, just because some is ready for marriage doesn't mean they are in a hurry to get married. They may be, and should be, very careful about jumping into marriage, the most serious contract into which they'll ever enter.

The Ready for Relationship (RFR) type is someone who has worked through their personal issues from previous relationships. When they find someone who is a match, they want to date that person exclusively. They have dated enough since their last committed relationship that they feel like they've done enough shopping and they are ready for a committed relationship. A person who is ready for a relationship is also ready to give up some of their independence. Someone who is ready for a relationship isn't necessarily ready for marriage. In fact, some people see the only reason to get married is to have children. If your lover feels this way and doesn't want to have children, they many never want to get married.

The Confused is a tough one for anyone to date. Even the Player will get frustrated with the Confused. One day the Confused type might tell the Player they are just looking for a good time. The next day, the Confused type may tell the Player they feel taken for granted. The Confused really have no business dating at all. They need to spend some time alone, getting to know themselves, and gaining confidence in who they are. Only then, can they evolve to be someone who can seriously play the dating scene.

The Injured are also tough to date. The have been in a prior relationship where they were badly hurt. The hurt may have occurred years ago. That doesn't matter if healing has never taken place. In other words, the Injured type has baggage. However, if the chemistry is right, that doesn't mean that it isn't worth the investment in time to help your soul mate heal. Just recognize that this is a high risk investment. There is no guarantee that the Injured will heal. And, if they do heal, there will likely be some scars that you will have to deal with forever. If you fall in love with an Injured type, it is best that you are the Ready for Marriage type. Since it will take time for the Injured to heal, it will give you time to determine if they really are the one you want to marry.

The Hungry are a very dangerous type to date. They are very clingy and have low self esteem. They are the type to stalk and be very jealous, even when there is no reason to be jealous. The attention of the Hungry can be very flattering. Be careful not to fall into the trap of allowing yourself to be flattered by the Hungry type. Like the confused, the Hungry type should not be dating. However, their situation is more serious. They should also seek counseling. Their problems are often deep rooted and need help to overcome. If you decide that you love someone who is Hungry, be prepared to provide a lot of love and support to help the Hungry person regain their self esteem. Just like falling in love with the Injured, falling in love with the Hungry is a high risk investment. Be prepared for the possibility of a painful separation.

Lastly, there is the Married. The Married type often will not leave their spouses either because they do not want to put their children through the pain of divorce, they do not want to put their spouse through the pain of divorce, they do not want to put themselves through the pain of divorce, or they aren't sure they want a divorce. They may want to test the single waters again before deciding if they want a divorce. Very few people set out to date a married person. Most consider it to be morally wrong and the risks are just too high. It is best to either use a full service dating service like Great Expectations or perform a background check yourself to find out if your date is married before you get too involved with him or her.

It is a good idea to come right out and ask your dating partner what they are looking for as soon as possible. They often won't be able to tell you in words exactly what their intentions are, either because they may not consciously understand their own desires or because they don't want to tell you how they really feel. However, by asking the question, you can read the non-verbal communication to get a better understanding of the truth. You can also ask some more subtle questions to learn some things about your partner. Their answers will likely reveal more about their intentions than they even understand about themselves.

As soon as your partner is comfortable to talk about their past, ask about it. Learn how long it has been since they were in their last relationship, how long they were in that relationship, and why it didn't work out. Ask about all their previous relationships that lasted for more than six months. See if you can determine a pattern. While your date may tell you they want one thing, their actions and history tell you the truth.

By Grace Green MARSEILLES, France -- Skirt-chasing playboy Daniel Anceneaux spent weeks talking with a sensual woman on the Internet before arranging a romantic rendezvous at a remote beach -- and discovering that his on-line sweetie of six months was his own mother! "I walked out on that dark beach thinking I was going to hook up with the girl of my dreams," the rattled bachelor later admitted. "And there she was, wearing white shorts and a pink tank top, just like she'd said she would. "But when I got close, she turned around -- and we both got the shock of our lives. I mean, I didn't know what to say. All I could think was, 'Oh my God! it's Mama!' " But the worst was yet to come. Just as the mortified mother and son realized the error of their ways, a patrolman passed by and cited them for visiting a restricted beach after dark. "Danny and I were so flustered, we blurted out the whole story to the cop," recalled matronly mom Nicole, 52. "The policeman wrote a report, a local TV station got hold of it -- and the next thing we knew, our picture and our story was all over the 6 o'clock news. "People started pointing and laughing at us on the street -- and they haven't stopped laughing since." The girl-crazy X-ray technician said he began flirting with normally straitlaced Nicole -- who lives six miles away in a Marseilles suburb -- while scouring the Internet for young ladies to put a little pizzazz in his life. Come to Parker to celebrate the holiday season! The Town of Parker and the
Colorado Driving Society invite you to the 2005 Parker Christmas Carriage
Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. on Mainstreet in historic downtown
Parker.
Sponsored by Colorado's own new home and community builder, Village Homes,
this festive “Winter Wonderland” themed parade will offer a spectacular
kickoff to the holidays in Parker and will feature dozens of horse-drawn
carriages, wagons and stagecoaches from across Colorado.

The Parker Mainstreet Center, 19650 E. Mainstreet, will be the host to a
variety of post-parade activities, including live music by the Runaway
Express band, an interactive petting zoo and pony rides, baby reindeer and
pictures with Santa! A holiday winter market will also offer food,
specialty gifts and more from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Performances of "The
Enchanted Toyshop" holiday ballet will take place at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The afternoon will wrap up with holiday musical performances by Alicia
Pope, the Legacy Point Band and the Parker Girl Scouts beginning at 5 p.m.
Attendees will also enjoy complimentary cookies and hot cocoa at the Mayor
’s Tree Lighting at 5:30 p.m.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

5. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

6. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

7. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)

8. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

9. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man , who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

10. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby ----This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted recently when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

THE HUSBAND STORE

A store that sells husbands has just opened where a woman may go to choose a husband from among many men. The store is composed of 6 floors, and the men increase in positive attributes as the shopper ascends the flights.

There is, however, a catch. As you open the door to any floor you may choose a man from that floor, but if you go up a floor, you cannot go back down except to exit the building.

So a woman goes to the shopping center to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men have good paying jobs.

The woman reads the sign and says to herself, "Well, that's better than my last boyfriend, but I wonder what's further up?"

So up she goes.

The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 - These men have good paying jobs and love kids.

The woman remarks to herself, "That's great, but I wonder what's further up?"

And up she goes again.

The third floor sign reads:

Enjoy a moderately strenuous 6 mile hike to the top of Carpenter Peak. This hike will have an el lavation gain of 1,000 feet. We will be rewarded with stunning views of the South Platte Valley, Douglas county and Denver. If the weather is bad we will take a lower trail in the park.

Roxborough State Park park is a favorite for nature lovers and birders. Sorry, no dogs on this hike.

Cost: $5 park admission per vehicle.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the "3" steps. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.

2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE

(Coherently) (ie . It is sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

RED FRIDAY

You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red -blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED. Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee ! that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

New opportunity* Anybody interested in joining a
Christian Singles Bowling League?
Here are some important facts about the league to consider:
Name of League: Christian Singles Strike Again!
Sunday evenings beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Arapahoe Bowling Center (Dayton, justsouth of Arapahoe)
Recreation competition with handicapped scores.
4 Person Teams! Male, Female, or Mixed (team can have 5 or 6 on team and alternate, or have subs every once in a while)
Teams may be made up from more than one congregation.
Teams must wear similar colored shirts or have custom shirts or T-shirts made. (awards for best team uniforms!)
Computerized scoring with complete stats for each individual and team for each day, current standings, and the entire season.
Less than $15 per night includes 3 games and year end prizes. Play should last about 2.5 hours.
2 Sundays per month. 1st and 3rd Sunday, flexible around
holidays.16 week (8 month season)
Beginning 1st Sunday in October (10/2/05)
Christian Singles only! 21 yrs old and over invited. (probably averaging 40 to 60 though)
Room for up to 20 teams of four players per team.
More than one team in a church acceptable. (Competition between teams, not churches) No alcohol or tobacco permitted by players during competition.
